Founded by brothers Stan and Wally Carter, the group began its operations in Brisbane's Roma Street markets in 1936 as a wholesaler. They were joined 20 years later by George Spencer, the husband of Stan’s daughter Lee. And in 1956, the company relocated to the Brisbane Markets site at Rocklea beginning a period of enormous growth for the group.

Today the Carter & Spencer Group is run by the founder’s grandson Craig Spencer and continues to grow, market and supply fresh fruit and vegetables to supermarkets around the world.  Since Craig took over management of the business in 1976, the business has experienced phenomenal growth and today, its produce can be purchased in leading supermarkets through Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Middle East.

A virtual ‘one stop supply solution’ for supermarkets, the company has experienced phenomenal growth in the last few years. It has negotiated agreements to supply New Zealand’s largest food retailer with fruit and vegetables for its chain of supermarkets; purchased its own citrus farm to help with the demand for fruit; and established offices throughout Asia in order to be able to offer a continuous 12 month product supply of fruit and vegetables through importing produce from countries with counter seasonal supply.

The Carter & Spencer Group is a family owned and operated, 100% Australian owned private company employing over 400 staff across 12 operational sites globally.

Today, Carter & Spencer has grown to be one of Australia’s leading fresh produce marketing and logistics experts with more than eight operational sites across Australia, a major distribution partnership in New Zealand and off-shore trading offices in Thailand and China.

Now under third generation management our inherent tradition to supply a diverse range of fresh produce and related services through totally committed partnerships exists as it did over 70 years ago.
